SMART MOVE FOR LIHLE MSIMANG & THAPELO HLOPHE AS THEY TEAM UP AS THE HOSTS OF NICKELODEON’s GENIUS

Posing testing puzzles and problems in science and maths for kids aged 9-13 from all over the country, Nickelodeon’s Genius season 2 aims to find SA’s smartest kids while demonstrating what fun learning about these vital subjects can be! The show kicks off exclusively on NickToons (DStv channel 308) every Friday from 17 February @ 15:00 CAT.

Commented Lihle, “It’s been an truly eye opening experience to work with the Nickelodeon’s Genius contestants and to catch their enthusiasm for maths and science! While they weren’t my best subjects at school, it was inspiring to see the knowledge, hard work and enthusiasm of all our contestants. We are all good at different things – we just need to know what they are!! In the words of Einstein: ‘Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.’”

Added Thapelo, “It’s been a huge privilege in my first presenting job to work with the future doctors and scientists of our nation, and to see such young kids compete in one of the toughest competitions, mentally. They have constantly surprised me with their intelligence and understanding, and the teamwork they demonstrate and the encouragement that they give to one another has been a joy to witness. In my view, each and every kid is a genius and I'm proud of every single one of them and it's been an unforgettable experience working with them. ”

Nickelodeon’s Genius is sponsored by ABSA, and supported by the Government’s Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The winners will receive an amazing prize: a R100,000 Mega-U account for each member of the winning team and an unforgettable visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA - where the winners will eat lunch with a real, live astronaut – and a trip to Universal Studios!

Heading onto the next phase of Nickelodeon’s Genius are Gerhard Van Wyk, Marno Bands of Laerskool Witpoort who teamed up with Adriaan Van Wyk of Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, while Zaahid Abdool and Saien Naidoo of Crawford College Pretoria got through to the next stage with Aishwarya Jhupsee of St Paulus Primary. The two qualifying teams from Pretoria will next appear in the Nickelodeon Genius TV game show, where they will square up against teams from all over South Africa.

A total of 48 kids aged 11-16 from schools throughout the region gathered at Heartfelt Arena (1-2 December) to take part in the Genius workshop and quiz knockout, designed to test their maths and science know-how to the limit as part of the joint initiative between Nickelodeon and Absa.

“All the kids in PTA showed resilience and spirit. The competition was very tight but our two finalists really knew their stuff, and 100% deserved to get through. Although only two teams could be selected, every child who took part should be extremely proud of themselves. We are super-stoked for the winning teams and cannot wait to see them take part in the finals,” said Chris Torline, Director, Marketing and Digital Media, VIMN Africa.
